Reduce Your Carbon Footprint
Calculating the carbon footprint of an organisation can be the first step in a programme to reduce the emissions it causes.
Climate change is one of the major challenges facing the global population and the natural environment today. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions released into the atmosphere in ever rapidly growing volumes are recognised to be responsible for this change.
A carbon footprint is defined as "the total set of GHG caused directly and indirectly by an individual, organisation, event or product" (UK Carbon Trust 2009). An organisation’s first carbon footprint report can be used to create a benchmark against which future environmental performance can be measured.
TEAM helps organisations determine their carbon footprint and implement plans and measures to reduce it.
Business Benefits
Carbon footprint analysis and reduction are key to preventing climate change. Enhancing energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions by using green energy and compensating for remaining GHG emissions by investing in carbon offsets all contribute towards the goal of being carbon neutral.
An increasing number of organisations are introducing measures to monitor and reduce their carbon footprint in order to lessen their impact on the environment and improve their reputation amongst customers and shareholders. Calculating an organisation’s carbon footprint can be the first step in reducing the emissions it causes. It provides a benchmark to measure the success of any carbon reduction projects.
How TEAM can help
TEAM’s qualified energy consultants can determine your carbon footprint and calculate carbon performance indicators to take into account changes in business activities and structure.
TEAM can help with any of the following services:
-
advise you on the procedures, data and processes needed to calculate the footprint
-
generate Carbon Footprint Reports in a format suitable for UK or international standards
-
develop a Carbon Management Plan in a form suitable for Finance Directors to understand
-
predict and track the financial implications - in co-operation with your Carbon or Energy Manager's improvement recommendations and Finance Director
-
Provide a temporary Carbon Manager to identify and cost improvements
Determining your carbon footprint includes measuring total tonnes of CO2 emissions per annum against the following metrics:
-
Number of employees
-
Production levels
-
Floor area
-
Financial turnover
Information gathered will be collated into a Carbon Footprint Analysis Report which can cover multiple sites and individual footprints for each site if required. The report includes recommendations enabling you to take action to reduce your organisation’s Carbon Footprint and will be produced working to the GHG Protocol that groups emissions into 3 categories by the level of control that an organisation has over the emissions. These three classification groups are:
-
Direct emissions – emissions that an organisation directly causes and controls – e.g. gas to provide space heating and hot water
-
Indirect emissions from imported utilities – most commonly this covers emissions from purchased electricity.
-
Other indirect emissions – including employee travel on company business/commuting
