How does it work?
At the start of each year, organisations affected are required to purchase allowances
of carbon which they expect to emit over the following year. At the end of each year, organisations covered will be placed in the CRC league table. Carbon allowances will then be recycled based on ranking within the league table. Organisations with poor environmental performance will be penalised, whilst those with good performance
will be rewarded.
Stage 1 – Preparation
TEAM first establish if your organisation is definitely subject to the CRC by reviewing your half hourly electricity consumption and undertaking a corporate review if required. We then manage your Registration for the Scheme or if it is found not to be necessary for you to register for the CRC, TEAM can handle your Information Disclosure.
The Preparation Stage includes a full audit of your energy consumption to validate your organisation’s total emissions. As part of this we:
- Ascertain any on-site electricity generation
- Perform data quality checks
- Identify any estimated energy usage and self-reads
- Confirm the core sources of emissions
- Establish key sites and metered supply points
- Collate any landlord / tenant supply arrangements
Early Action Metrics – TEAM can help you implement the following actions to help you improve your position in the CRC league table:
- Advanced Metering – TEAM can provide feasibility studies and supply complete AMR solutions.
- Carbon Trust Standard – TEAM can prepare your organisation for a successful assessment under the Carbon Trust’s national scheme that recognises good practice in reducing carbon emissions
Optional – Carbon Footprint calculation (not required for CRC) involves review of transport fuel which is excluded from CRC
Stage 2 – Compliance
Annual and Footprint Reports – TEAM will compile and submit your Annual and Footprint Reports to the scheme administrator by the required deadlines each year.
The Evidence Pack – TEAM put all records that support the Annual and Footprint Report into an Evidence Pack as required for the scheme.
Stage 3 – Implementation
Forecasting – TEAM prepare budget forecasts of your required emissions allowances, by building up information across your portfolio and recording factors affecting the energy performance of individual sites.
Buying and Selling Allowances – TEAM can buy, sell or bank carbon allowances on your behalf. We advise you whether allowances you have left over, should be banked and used to cover emissions in future years or sold depending on carbon market conditions.
Monitoring Performance – TEAM monitor your ongoing carbon performance and report dynamically on your expected end-of-year results to assist budget planning.
Stage 4 – Carbon Reduction
The direct savings that arise from an effective energy reduction programme far outweigh any marginal benefits that can be achieved through participating in the CRC. Therefore, TEAM can provide ongoing support in a number of important areas to help you improve your overall carbon performance and thereby obtain the maximum benefits from participating in the CRC.
- Carbon Footprint – measure and monitor the impact of your organisation on the environment
- Benchmarking - produce league tables to detect waste and identify potential for energy savings
- Energy Surveys – to assess opportunities for carbon reductions
- Feasibility Studies – to evaluate potential costs and savings from recommended measures
- Project Management – to ensure successful implementation of carbon reduction schemes
- Energy Saving Solutions – from design, finance, supply to installation and operation of carbon saving solutions
Initial Impact Assessment
If you are unsure of how to start the process of preparing for the CRC, TEAM can help you assess the potential impact on your business. We can support you with the development of your CRC strategy and help you build a tailored action plan. This can involve Risk Assessment, prediction of expected capital expenditure, preparation of “what-if” forecasts and the formulation of risk reduction strategies.
