A critique of the current DEC proposals for Smart Meters together with an exploration of how user gains could be maximised. Smart Meters are coming — in the Energy End Use Directive1 and the Smart Metering Mandate2, the European Commission requires their installation. European Standards are being developed and DECC has been running a consultation on how this should be implemented in the UK. But what features and systems need to be implemented to ensure that it is the end-user who will gain the maximum advantage and save money ? Or are Smart Meters just another way to improve utility profits ? It’s not that the utility should lose; rather that the end-user should gain more.
