ISO Launches ISO 50001 Energy Management Standard

The International Organization for Standardization has published the new eagerly awaited ISO 50001 standard on energy management systems on 15 June. It is estimated the standard could have a positive impact on some 60 % of the world's energy use.

The new ISO 50001 provides public and private sector organisations with management strategies to increase energy efficiency, reduce costs and improve their energy performance. ISO 50001 is compatible with BS EN 16001 so that the transition to the former will be straightforward.

The standard is now available on the ISO Website www.iso.org. In addition, ISO is launching the standard on 17 June at the Geneva International Conference Centre (CICG).

ISO 50001 is intended to provide organisations with a recognised framework for integrating energy performance into their management practices. Multinational organisations will have access to a single standard for implementation across the whole of the organisation with a consistent methodology for identifying and implementing improvements. The standard is designed to:

  • Help organisations in making better use of their existing energy-consuming assets
  • Create transparency and facilitate communication on the management of energy resources
  • Promote energy management best practices and reinforce good energy management behaviours
  • Assist facilities in evaluating and prioritising the implementation of new energy-efficient technologies
  • Provide a framework for promoting energy efficiency throughout the supply chain
  • Facilitate energy management improvements for greenhouse gas emission reduction projects
  • Allow integration with other organisational management systems
