Our Head of Consultancy, Timothy Holman, reflects on the UK Government’s creation of the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero.
The devolution of the responsibility for net zero from BEIS at this critical time is welcome news and puts back a much needed focus after its predecessor the Department for Energy and Climate Change was abolished by Theresa May in 2016. I hope that this move from the Government demonstrates the UK’s commitment to the energy transition and acceleration of policies to deliver net zero.
It is important that this new department is given the support and autonomy to deliver on its promises and make real change. By its own omission, delivery against the Government’s net zero strategy is already taking too long, so the hope is that the new administration will move quickly to take bold actions and set out clear effective policies.
To help businesses with the low carbon transition there needs to be a much greater focus on non-domestic energy efficiency, and providing the right guidance and tools that remove the barriers to action.
