7 Common Pitfalls to Avoid When Creating Your Carbon Reduction Plan

Many organisations across both the public and private sector will be revisiting or developing their own roadmap to reducing the carbon they produce.

Although carbon reduction plans come with the best of intentions, whether these include goals to hit net zero by 2050 or to meet a target of carbon neutrality earlier than this. It is easy to fall for the same pitfalls when planning how you will achieve your targets.

In this guide, our Head of Consultancy, Timothy Holman, draws on his practical consultancy experience to outline how organisations can avoid the most common pitfalls when developing a Carbon Reduction Plan.

British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme (BICS): What It Means for Energy Management in the UK

The UK Government has set out the final design of the British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme (BICS), a long‑term policy aimed at lowering electricity costs for eligible energy‑intensive manufacturers from April 2027. While the scheme is focused on the manufacturing sector, its implications extend more broadly across UK energy management, particularly when considered alongside existing expectations around energy governance, data integrity and the alignment of carbon strategies across complex estates.

Learn more about the policy implications of BICS for energy management in the UK.

Energy Saving Opportunity Scheme Fines

The Environment Agency has begun publishing enforcement and civil penalty data relating to Energy Saving Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) Phase 3 compliance. This data provides insight into how ESOS commitments are being enforced in practice, the types of breaches attracting penalties, and what UK organisations should consider as they prepare for Phase 4. Discover more about the ESOS fines.

2024 UK Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Final Figures

The Government’s final UK Greenhouse Gas Emissions statistics for 2024 show a modest but meaningful year‑on‑year fall in emissions, underscoring the UK’s long‑term decarbonisation trajectory. At the same time, the data reveals growing divergence between sectors, with progress increasingly driven by power generation rather than demand‑side reductions in transport and the built environment. Read about the figures from the government in more detail.

Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme: Common Delivery Issues UK Organisations Face

ESOS has evolved significantly since its introduction, with Phase 3 introducing tighter requirements around data quality, coverage thresholds and action planning. With the deadline for Phase 4 not far off, many of the delivery challenges organisations encounter are not technical failures, but issues rooted in early assumptions, governance and preparation. Understanding these recurring delivery risks can help organisations reduce compliance friction and improve outcomes.

The UK Government Plans to Weaken the Link Between Gas and Electricity Prices

The UK Government has set out new measures designed to loosen the link between gas and electricity prices, following renewed volatility in global fossil fuel markets. While the reforms stop short of fundamental market restructuring, they signal a continued shift in UK energy policy towards greater use of fixed‑price and low‑carbon generation to improve price stability for households and businesses alike. Read our update on this to understand what the government is proposing and the implications.
