DESNZ releases energy statistics publication 2025

On Thursday 31 July, The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) published the annual energy statistics publication Digest of UK Energy Statistics (DUKES) 2025. DESNZ highlights that the share of UK electricity generation from renewable technologies reached a new record high of 50.4% in 2024, up from 46.5% in 2023. It notes that wind generation reached a record high, solar output matched the record high of 2023, and bioenergy generation increased by 17%.

DESNZ adds that fossil fuels reached a record low of 31.8% of generation in 2024, with coal generation ceasing in September 2024. In addition, it states that gas remained the principal form of electricity generation at 30.4%, slightly outpacing wind energy’s contribution of 29.2% of generation.

Global humidity reached record levels in 2024, says latest climate report

The latest State of the Climate report confirms 2024 was the warmest year on record, likely exceeding 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. Global humidity hit record highs and ocean temperatures soared.

Dr Kate Willett at the Met Office said, “Human health can be seriously affected by high heat and humidity. Such a dramatic increase in the occurrence of these humid-heat events is bringing more societies into challenging, potentially life-threatening, situations.”

SBTi: Popularity of business decarbonisation targets soars

Companies representing more than 40% of the global market capitalisation have now set emissions reduction aims verified by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), with far more businesses setting and maintaining targets than abandoning them.
