COP26 – Day one at the World Leaders Summit
Launching the Summit, world leaders and key hosts including broadcaster and naturalist, David Attenborough and HRH The Prince of Wales, took to the stage to discuss the urgency of climate action. It was agreed that we must act together in this decisive decade to make change happen, and limit global warming to below 2°c. Our Head of Operations, Timothy Holman, shares the highlights from the day and his own thoughts on the commitments made by both China and India.
COP26 – End to deforestation
Day two saw a very exciting announcement, as more than 100 world leaders committed to ending and reversing deforestation by 2030 in the first major deal out of the Summit. As part of the Global Methane Pledge, more than 100 of the UN’s member states committed to this. Our Senior Energy Consultant, Sam Arje, provided his thoughts on the announcements.
COP26 – UK to become the world’s first net zero financial centre
Marking Finance Day at COP26, day three was vital in discussing the funding required to ensure change can be made globally. The UK committed to being the first net zero aligned financial centre in the world and legally mandating financial institutions to publicly disclose decarbonisation transition plans. COP26 – How to move away from fossil fuels
Day four saw Energy Day at the Summit, as negotiators discussed moving way from fossil fuels. 180 nations and organisations pledged to phase out coal, including five of the world’s top coal power generators. Additionally, 25 countries and public finance institutions committed to end finance for overseas fossil fuel energy projects by 2022 and shift to clean energy. Day five was Youth and Public Engagement day which saw many young climate activists share their views and call on global leaders to make strong and decisive pledges to tackle the climate emergency.
