DESNZ has opened a consultation seeking views on options for regulating third-party intermediaries (TPIs) in the energy retail market to protect consumers and businesses. The consultation outlines proposals to regulate TPIs, enhance consumer protection, improve market transparency and ensure that TPIs contribute positively to the energy sectors’ transition to net zero.

National Gas has published its Gas Winter Outlook 2024 report

In its Gas Winter Outlook 2024 report, National Gas found that the UK is well-positioned to meet its energy needs through a mix of sources, including the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS), Norway, LNG imports, and interconnectors with Belgium and the Netherlands. With gas continuing to play a crucial role during peak demand periods, complementing renewable energy sources to ensure a resilient power supply.

The Energy Crisis Commission (ECC) recently published a report highlighting the UK’s vulnerability to future energy crises due to its heavy reliance on gas for heating and power. The report emphasizes that policy inconsistency and insufficient investment have left the country critically unprepared for price spikes.

Britain’s last coal-fired power station set to close in landmark moment

The UK’s last remaining coal-fired power station shut at the end of September, drawing to a close Britain’s 142-year reliance on the fossil fuel to produce electricity. According to Government statistics, renewables, mainly wind and solar power, now make up more than half of the mix.

Throughout this month, prices have fluctuated due to below average temperature at the start of the month, which has increased to above average towards the end of the month. Gas contracts saw bearish pressure, contrasted against a much more mixed outlook for the power markets.

Enfinium begins UK’s first carbon capture pilot

Enfinium has launched the UK’s first carbon capture pilot at an energy from waste facility, commencing a 12-month trial at its Ferrybridge-1 site in Knottingley, West Yorkshire. The project captures one tonne of carbon dioxide per day using a scaled-down carbon capture and storage (CCS) system supplied by Hitachi Zosen Inova (HZI).

The pilot aims to collect operational data on performance metrics such as CO2 capture rates and solvent degradation. This information will inform potential future deployment of CCS technology across Enfinium’s six UK energy from waste facilities.

Emma Pinchbeck announced as the new Chief Executive of the Climate Change Committee

Following former CEO of the Climate Change Committee, Chris Stark’s resignation, the Committee has appointed Emma Pinchbeck as CEO. Emma will oversee the publication of the Seventh Carbon Budget advice in early 2025 and the fourth Climate Change Risk Assessment independent assessment in 2026.

Energy UK conference 2024: keynote speech by Ed Miliband

In a speech to Energy UK’s annual conference, Energy Secretary Ed Miliband, stressed the importance of strengthening energy security, vowing to take on the “blockers” to accelerate expansion of renewable energy.

UK Government confirms funding for new carbon capture sites

The UK Government has confirmed funding for the launch of the UK’s first carbon capture sites. It outlines that two sites in Teesside and Merseyside are expected to receive funding, creating 4,000 new direct jobs. The announcement highlights that up to £21.7bn of funding will be made available, over 25 years, to be allocated between these two clusters.

UK council leaders back net zero duty despite implementation nerves

In the UK100’s latest report, Local Net Zero 2.0: The Moment to Deliver, a resounding 88% of Britain’s local authority leaders would welcome a statutory duty to tackle climate change, but only if it came with the necessary powers and funding.
